Personal Bio

Don Cornelson was born and raised, isolated with his family, in the heart of India. Entertainment was created not purchased. He did not have the many options available to the typical American child - stores filled with games and toys, schoolyards with a half-dozen sports fields and game courts or, the biggest entertainment item in the western world, television.

He had something else - a creative mind and a family, including one sister and two brothers, that was forced to entertain themselves in a wild and mysterious land. Rather than instill boredom, his environment inspired imagination and invention. Games were invented with sticks and stones, sports with lines in the dirt and rules for what they meant, and, rather than television, stories were made up and told with the excitement and adventure of a Hollywood movie.

It can be rightly said that Don's game inventing started back then, in his childhood, in the heart of India. After moving to Seattle, Washington, at the age of ten, Don's inventive creativity multiplied with the multitude of toy and game products suddenly available to him. But, the lessons of his childhood never wavered - real entertainment originated from the interaction of the people around you. Rather than follow the rules of toys and games, Don used them as components to create fantasy worlds of knights and dragons, spaceships fighting ravenous Mar's men, submarines discovering watery civilizations.

As youth turned into adulthood, Don's spirit of discovery and adventure took him on the adventure of a lifetime. After college, he and his younger brother, Mark, traveled the world. With a one-way ticket to Hong Kong and back packs stuffed full, they spent six months on, what in truth was an expedition of survival - living and traveling as the natives lived and traveled. This experience fortified his understanding and acceptance of other cultures, politics, business practices and, of course, how peoples of the world entertained themselves. After returning and settling into a work-a-day world he began to contemplate a new and unique board game system. This system was so unique Don was awarded an United States patent for his Variable Surface Game Board System.

Don co-founded and was the Creative Director of Game Concepts in 1985. Over the next seven years Game Concepts published 3 board and card games and a line of Dart Sports™ Dart Board Overlays. Game Concepts grew to national success with more than 1,500 retail outlets across the country. In the early 90s, Don began to consult and design games for other independent game companies and entrepreneurs. Don left Game Concepts in 1993 and founded Cornelson Design where his business sense and unique creativity earned him a prominent client list that includes The Seattle Mariners Baseball Club, Seattle CyberKnife Center at Swedish Medical Center, Overlake Breast MRI, Advanced Open Imaging, Chateau St. Michelle Winery, Villa Mt. Eden Winery, US Cigars, Moss Adams LLP and The Washington State Dairy Council. Today Cornelson Design is a full service Design, Advertising and Marketing firm serving clients in the Puget Sound and across the country.
